What Landfills Can't Take--And Why!!!

Removal Services Landfill
Landfills all over Canada have different restrictions on what they can and cannot accept and have different reasons for doing so! Below are just some of the items most landfills will not accept. To find out more about what your local landfill can and cannot take, give them a call or check your city services online!

Mattresses and Box Springs

Mattresses, for example, are something that a landfill will not accept, and for good reason. They cannot be compressed, so they take up a large amount of dump space, which means less room for garbage. If that happens then another landfill would have to be opened and no one wants that when many city service funding can be spent elsewhere. The metal springs that are in mattresses also clog up dump machinery, and conventional mattresses do have toxic chemicals in them that can get into the ground water.

Medication and Medical Supplies

An item that falls under the household hazard waste category is prescription medication and syringes. The reason these items cannot be taken in your regular garbage is because medications can be harmful to the environment and to animals. Syringes are not only dangerous to animals and the environment but they can also dangerous to sanitation workers as well. Syringes should be stored in a puncture proof container until disposal. Medications and other such items can normally be returned to a pharmacy free of charge and they have the proper means to dispose of them. Always call them to confirm before just showing up!

Ammunition is another item that you want to make sure you dispose of properly and do not want it to end up in a landfill! If there was every a fire at the landfill the ammunition can heat up, and go off. The best way to get rid of ammunition is to call your local police department. A lot of the time they can take it and dispose of it safely for you. If they do not, they can normally give you an idea of where you should be disposing of it. Another option is the local gun range; they may be able and willing to take it off your hands and dispose of it for you.

Fridges and Freezers

Fridges and freezers are an item that sometimes can or cannot be taken to landfills depending on your location. Some landfills will not take them at all, while others will for a fee. Some fridges and freezers contain Freon, which is an ozone depleting substance and requires trained individuals to remove it safely. Which is why some locations cannot them, as they do no have to means to dispose of the Freon.

Other Appliances

Most of your household appliances like stoves, air conditioners, hot water heaters and dehumidifiers, as well as fridges and freezers cannot be thrown out in your regular garbage as they sometimes contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which is the fancy name for Freon. This is harmful to the environment if not disposed of properly.

So if your playing the “should I, shouldn’t I throw this in the trash?” game, always be sure to read up and find out what is accepted at your local landfill. Fees, charges and removal costs can be associated if you throw out items that you're not supposed to.
